The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Claremont was on a mission to spread happiness for a good cause on Saturday when members handed out (free) hugs in the area around Cavendish Square to create awareness for blood donation.

Theresa Felino of the Western Cape youth commission of the church explains the activities were part of a worldwide youth day.

“This day is set aside for young people all over the world to reach out to their various communities throughout the day, with acts of service and compassion,” she says.

“While the serious side is creating awareness for the need of blood donors, there is also an element of fun to get them to know their community by giving people free hugs.

“Part of the day was also reaching out to the homeless in the area with our hugs as well as giving them a sandwich, praying for them and giving them a scripture booklet.”
