Police in Athlone have made a number of arrests while conducting festive season operations, which included searching various known drug houses, over the weekend.

Twenty-three people were arrested for the possession of drugs after their houses were searched. Police found 7g heroine, 6g tik, and 324 units of mandrax and 120g dagga.

Seven vehicle checkpoints were held.

More than 100 people were searched in the area. These stop-and-searches led to two arrests for possession of stolen property and one for house robbery.

Fifteen wanted people were found and arrested during two tracing operations by detectives.

Four spaza shops were visited.

One person was arrested for possession of a firearm and one firearm was confiscated.

Three people were arrested for crimes against woman and children. A total of 19 such cases were reported.

One person was arrested for attempted murder and another four for common assault.

Thirteen people were arrested for drunk driving, five for malicious damage to property and one for failing to report a firearm which had been lost or stolen.

“Station commander Colonel Mark Adonis says Athlone police will have zero tolerance to crime this festive season and his officers are ready to protect and serve during the festive season. The community is urged to report illegal activities in the areas the live. All information will be regarded as confidential,” says Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman.

Gang house searchedOn Friday, officers searched a wendy house in Eighth Avenue in Bokmakierie, believed to belong to a member of the Hard Livings gang, and arrested a man and a woman, aged 24 and 27 respectively, for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

A 9mm Z88 pistol, an extended magazine, live 9mm ammunition and a small quantity of dagga and mandrax were seized.

A high-speed chase resulted in four arrests in Belgravia on Friday night.

“At about 23:15 traffic officers gave chase in Eighth Avenue, Belgravia. The vehicle failed to stop and one of the occupants fired shots at traffic officers during the chase. The car was trapped in a dead end in Eighth Avenue and police managed to arrest four men, ages 25 to 30,” says Norman.

Police confiscated a 9mm Ruger pistol, one magazine and live ammunition as well as an imitation firearm with a magazine.

No-one was injured in the car chase or arrest.

The police are investigating a case of attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The suspects appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and attempted murder.

“Athlone police would like to take this opportunity to wish the Christian community a blessed Christmas and safe festive season,” Norman adds.
