THE date for Africa Bike Week 2016 has been set. Margate will come alive with burning rubber and roaring motorcycles from 28 April to 1 May, 2016.

The event has brought thousands of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts to the area for the past seven years, creating tremendous economic spin-offs and tourism benefits for Margate.

The announcement was made at a special media briefing at Hibiscus Coast Municipality this week.

Carl Frayne, project manager for Africa Bike Week said that planning had already begun and more information would be released as things develop.

“More announcements will be made in due course. We have decided to spice up the event this year.”

This year, bikers who entered the main area along the beach front (Panorama Parade), were charged R250.

Next year, the fee will not be applied.

“The idea worked, but there was some negative media value. We also have a new layout planned so the fee will not be necessary,” said Frayne.

Max Mbili, Hibiscus Coast Municipality manager, said it was unknown how much the municipality will invest in the event at this stage.

“All I can say is that we [municipality] will contribute in cash and kind to the event,” said Mbili.

The usual live entertainment, Harley-Davidson dealers, adrenaline-pumping demos, exhibitions and the like, will take place
