DURING a time of drought and where the Ugu District Municipality asks residents to save water, a New Town resident says they should “practice what they preach”.

“There are a number of leaking valves and pipes in the area which I have reported on several occasions, but nothing has been done to repair them,” said Howard­ Smith.

He also complained about the condition in which contractors leave the area once their work is complete.

Smith said he had even been to the offices to lay a complaint, but that has not helped either.

He said the leaking valves in Quarry and Mitchell Drive have not been repaired in months. but nobody has been out to assess the problem.

“I also reported that contractors left a piece of land they had dug up, cordoned off with four sticks and danger tape on Victory Road. Nothing has been done about it since May.”

He said on Unity Road, in the bushes, contractors have thrown old pipes, leaving the area untidy.

“We had water interruptions last week over a few days. When contractors resumed work on Tuesday, the TLB they were using ran out of diesel. So they lay idle for most of the day waiting for diesel.”

Ugu District Municipality was approached for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press
