“THE secret to a successful and happy marriage is loving one another as though its the first time you laid eyes on each other.”

So say Jerry and Noreen Van Niekerk from Ramsgate who celebrated their 56th anniversary on 18 April.

The couple met in Pietermaritzburg after being introduced by rugby friends. Noreen said they were in a relationship for a year before they tied the knot.

Jerry said he proposed to Noreen on her 21st birthday in January and they married a few months later.

They said they remember the proposal as if it was yesterday.

Other ingredients of a good marriage are having faith, respecting one another, being friends with each other, being able to laugh with one another and most importantly, loving your children and each other.

“We admit that its not always smooth. You have your ups and downs, but the secret is getting over your challenges together and enjoying the happy moments together,” said Jerry.

He said both the husband and wife should give their 100% to the relationship.

“You should find a happy medium between the two of you, give it your all.

“If you giving 50% where does the other 50% go,” said Jerry.

Noreen said nothing beats allowing your husband lead you.

“When we said ‘for better, for worse’ we meant it.

“It is also about letting the man be the leader - he is stronger and as a wife you should follow him.

“Never try to be equal to him.”

The couple said they are grateful of having loving and supportive children.
