Child porn suspect released on bail

2015-09-10 06:00

A 22-YEAR-OLD man was arrested in Pennington on Tuesday after police linked him to a global child pornography network.

The man, who has a terminal illness and lives with his grandmother, appeared in court in Gauteng and was released on R1000 bail. The case was postponed to 10 November.

The Women and Men Against Child Abuse organisation said police seized a laptop containing thousands of images and video clips, all portraying child porn.

The man’s arrest comes after an ongoing investigation into child porn rings in South Africa and abroad initiated by Belgian police.

“What we have seen is how this team is committed, given the amount of work they have to do and the time that it has taken to investigate the suspects that they’re arresting currently and the way they are going about it. We just feel that this is a positive move when it comes to child-abuse material on the internet,” said the organisation’s spokesperson,Germaine Vogel.

“We feel that this is the first step and of course what we’re hoping to see in the near future is a reform in our legislation,’’ she said.

According to the George Herald, the man is unemployed and faces charges relating to the possession and distribution of child abuse images of children aged up to five.

Vogel said the man’s user profile was taken over by Chief Inspector Tim Van Eester of the Belgian police after investigators arrested a man in Plettenberg Bay on similar charges.

The global investigation is known as Cloud 9. - Supplied
