DA walk out of council meeting

2015-07-02 06:00

DRAMA unfolded at Tuesday’s council meeting when Democratic Alliance councillors walked out of Hibiscus Coast Municipality chambers.

This transpired after an ANC councillor asked for an item to be removed from the agenda until legal opinion is obtained.

The item was to note the exoneration of DA councillor, Peter Naudé, who recently won an appeal against the conviction and sanction imposed on him by HCM for alleged breach of the code of conduct.

DA caucus leader, George Henderson, said he did not see the need for obtaining legal advice as the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs had upheld the appeal.

The DA was however, out voted on the matter and the item was removed from the agenda.

Henderson said the matter had been dragging for 18 months and all the party wanted was for it to be noted.

DA councillors decided to leave the meeting.

As they left chambers, an ANC councillor shouted: “leave, out”.

Henderson said he found the behaviour of the councillor very disturbing and disrespectful
