Disabled man is ‘discriminated against’

2015-04-30 14:58

A DISABLED man, Joe Graaf (59) from Scottsburg- Elysium, feels he is being discriminated against because of his disability and is unable to find work on the South Coast since he moved from Johannesburg.

He feels that employers and businesses don’t even take the time to respond to a person’s CV when they see they are disabled.

Graaf was diagnosed with discectomy which is the surgical removal of herniated disc material that presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord, there fore he has a restriction in movement.

Graaf previously worked as a company caretaker for more than 22 years.

“I have been a caretaker of facilities and complexes and apartments and managed and maintained them for 22 years before being retrenched when the company changed management.”

One of his concerns is that the South African government says that disabled people should be given an equal opportunity of employment as that of other person.

According to the Employment Equity Act section 2.1 it states that all disabled people shall have the right to employment in the open labour market and appropriate measures such as quota systems and training programmes shall be implemented by government and employers to ensure that opportunities are created in the work place which will allow for the full enjoyment of this right.

“I have a wife and a daughter, also with a disability as she was born with Down syndrome, and we too just want to be employed.”

Graff said he is fit to work as is arms and legs are fully functional.

“I just wish I could find an opportunity to be employed without being victimised as a disabled person.”
