THE municipality has reaffirmed its commitment of creating job opportunities for communities in an attempt of alleviate unemployment in the district.

This was expressed at the recent Expanded Publics Works Programme Knowledge Management (EPWP) session with the family of local municipalities who were mostly represented on this occasion.

The programme is an initiative by government which aims to reduce levels of unemployment and alleviate poverty by creating jobs while providing training tailors to improve skills.

The municipality has set aside R1 million for the programme which enabled a successful implementation of it through positively responding to the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality in the district.

Ugu District Municipality, through the Expanded Publics Works Programme, is working with communities where more than 55 employment opportunities have been created for the youth coming from the six local municipalities within the district.

Addressing the EPWP session, municipal manager DD Naidoo emphasised the fact that the municipality will stop at nothing to ensure that the programme achieves its intended objectives - that of providing employment for our communities, with the emphasis being on the youth employment.

The municipality has established a dedicated unit to co-ordinate monitor and evaluate progress in the implementation of EPWP projects.

Each department of the municipality has appointed a dedicated EPWP champion who is responsible for selecting suitable projects for inclusion in the EPWP programmes.

In ensuring that the project is of immense benefit to its beneficiaries beyond the monthly stipends, a number of trainings have been planned for the purpose of imparting skills to the project beneficiaries in HIV/Aids, tree felling and occupational health and safety, among others.

The National Development Plan Vision 2030 through a diagnostic report, has identified unemployment as one of the socioeconomic challenges facing our country.

In line with the government’s declaration of war on poverty and unemployment, a declaration was entered into by the family of municipalities at the meeting where they all reaffirmed their commitment towards the fight for unemployment and giving sufficient support to the EPWP programme.
