Drought affects everyone, including livestock

2015-06-04 06:01

THE effect of the dry season has not only affected major stakeholders, like farmers, but it has hit in the remote areas of the South Coast.

Livestock in most areas in the Ugu region is suffering from the drought that is increasingly affecting the whole country.

Water levels in major rivers like uMzumbe, Mpenjati, Mzimkhulu and uMkomaas have decreased drastically.

This has a negative impact on the day-to-day activities of the population. Wells and fountains have dried up making rivers the primary source of water. If this water vanishes where will people get water from.

What worsens the situation is the current warm temperature. If the heat is up, dehydration will be evident in our children since they are vulnerable to weather changes. Society must be taught about conserving water until showers return in the next season.

Leadership must take a stand and create a means of reaching out to people before the situation gets out of hand.
