TELKOM installed its fourth Integrated Symmetrical Access Node (Isam) box at Oslo Beach on Marine Drive on Friday and technicians celebrated after commissioning and testing this new technology.

Technical officer Anton Norman said the white big box gives faster ADSL and VDSL connection.

“The Isam box is made of optic fibre which shortens the distance of copper for broadband and allows congestion-free connection, which makes streaming much faster,” said Norman.

He said the new technology boxes started rolling out in Ugu at the beginning of August and there are more to come.

Norman explained how customers’ ADSL and VDSL experience will change.

“If a customer is 800m away from the box they get 40 MB VDSL, if they are 1 200m away they get 20 MB VDSL and ADSL, and so on,” he said.

Norman said this box supports triple-play services, high-speed data, and voice and live streaming giving customers fewer internet problems. Operations manager and site lead, Sagie Andrew Govender said Telkom is now focused on broadband service delivery with an extensive roll-out on fibre to the home in the Durban Metro areas, which will later extend to other outlying areas where clients are attaining speeds of up to 100megs. “It’s the era of broadband now, gone are the days of fixed -ine services only,” said Govender
