Gambling licence litigation drags on

LITIGATION relating to bingo licensing in KwaZulu-Natal is ongoing and one of the terminals which has been affected is Galaxy Bingo Southcoast Mall.

A total of 67 staff were retrenched and it is uncertain whether these people will get their jobs back.

On the other hand the People’s Forum Against EBTs wants to stop these casinos from operating in shopping malls.

In February the forum joined forces with Premier Senzo Mchunu and the MEC for Finance, Belinda Scott, to try to overturn licences granted to KZN bingo hall operators.

Nine gambling board members were also suspended after some had met secretly and granted the licences. A new board came into effect in August.

Brandon Pillay of the People’s Forum Against EBTs said judging from presentations rendered by the community who were against bingo outlets, they wished to see changes in the guidelines.

“For example, these bingo outlets should not be easily accessible to the public.

“They should not be situated in shopping malls,” said Pillay.

Spokesperson for the KZN Gambling and Betting Board said due to ongoing litigation, the board was unable to comment.

“The outcome of the licences being granted is yet to be decided by court proceedings,” said Naidoo
