House beneficiaries must reapply

2015-07-30 06:00

A HANDFUL of beneficiaries in the Merlewood low-cost housing project have had to reapply for the houses which they received approval for in 1994.

This was due to an error with their surnames on the application forms.

Laura Williams said she and eight others had different surnames on the forms.

“Every other detail was correct, including our identity numbers, but we were told to reapply. We did so in June, but we still have not had any feedback.”

Williams said she, and the others who are also waiting for the outcome of their new application, may have to wait for the houses in the next phase of the project.

“We have already been waiting for 20 years. We are getting older and we need these houses because we live in terrible conditions.”

Eliza Lupke said the Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM) asked beneficiaries to resubmit documentation in 2011.

“Three years later, some of us found out that our surnames are incorrect on the list of beneficiaries. Something is wrong. How many times must we apply, and how much longer must we wait?” she asked.

Her sister, Rita Ramiah echoed her sentiments saying she has also had to resend her application to HCM.

Cherimona Saunders said she was tired of going “back and forth”.

“I am so fed up with being messed around and being given different information. I have waited years for this house. All I want is my home,” said Saunders.

“We would like some clarity on our situation. Someone must tell us what is going on,” she said.

HCM was approached for comment but none was sent to the Fever at the time of going to press
