PHUMLANI Mlungu Zondi (23) of Saiccor Village in Umkomaas was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after appearing in the Scottburgh Regional Court recently for house robbery.

The case was investigated by Detective Constable Simphiwe Msawoni of the Umkomaas SAPS Detective Service. Station Commander, Colonel “PN” Govender commended the detectives for the thorough investigation and successful prosecution of the accused.

“We cannot have ruthless criminals preying on innocent people, especially the elderly. We will do everything in our power to remove criminals from society and have them prosecuted for their crimes,” said Govender.

On 30 November, 2013, a 71-year-old man was accosted by two unknown men outside his flat in Bisset Street, Umkomaas.

He was forced back into his flat at knifepoint while the suspects demanded money. The victim managed to get his firearm out and fired a shot before he was overpowered. The suspects made off with the firearm and two cellphones. Two men were subsequently arrested and prosecuted.

One of the accused was acquitted while Zondi was convicted of the crime. - Supplied
