How to clean up after a smoking tenant

2015-05-28 06:00

HAVING a tenant who smokes can become a problem once the tenant has moved out and left the stench of smoke behind.

Tobacco smoke can soak into just about everything and can be quite tough to get rid of. Here are a few handy tips to getting your property smelling fresh again.

Steam clean all the carpets and upholstered furniture in the house and use a deodorising spray after the clean. Unfortunately this will not remove the scent completely but it will make the process slightly easier.

Clean all the bedding, couch cushions and fabrics like you normally would. Be sure to leave these outside of the house during the deodorising process.

Clean the windows and mirrors with a mixture of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Be sure the rinse them off properly to avoid leaving smears.

Use distilled vinegar to wipe down any wooden furniture and all the appliances left in the home. Use paper towels to absorb any additional vinegar.

Wipe down the walls with a mix of cleaning liquid and vinegar. Make sure you clean the walls properly or the smell will simply stay in the house, as it sticks to the walls. If there are smoke stains on the walls, you may need to repaint them after cleaning.

Mix the same cleaning solution you used on the walls and wipe down all the counters, cupboards and shelves. You may also use bleach for this, but use it with caution, rinse the surfaces thoroughly and be sure to keep the room ventilated.

Sprinkle baking soda on the carpets and upholstered furniture and let it sit over night. Vacuum it all up the next day.

Avoid using scented candle or incense to mask the smell, as this will just make the scent overwhelming and oppressive. Simply leave as many windows and doors open during the cleaning process in order to air the house out.

If the scent persists, place small bowls of vinegar around the house, as it is a natural deodoriser. Activated charcoal and baking soda will also work well.

Renting out a property comes with risks and responsibilities. If you do not want a smoking tenant, be clear in your advertisements and make sure the lease specifies this. – Property24
