Make every day Mandela Day editorial comment

2015-07-23 06:02

DURING July and especially this week, the world pays homage to the shining legacy left by Nelson Mandela.

Mandela is arguably the most famous South African ever and he rightfully used that fame and influence to better the lives of others.

Although well known for being the proponent of reconciliation and forgiveness, Mandela was also an advocate for education, nature conservation, preservation of language, culture and sport.

The image of him lifting the Webb Ellis Cup with Francois Pienaar is forever etched in our minds.

Let us make every day Mandela Day by extending the 67 minutes we are supposed to spend on 18 July to our daily lives.

That way we ensure that the less unfortunate don’t feel excluded and their dignity is restored.

By doing that, we will also alleviate the plight of some of the hopeless who see suicide as the only way out.

Well done to those who will set time aside this week to help others. You are making your community and your country proud
