Mayor engages communities on service delivery

AS part of participatory democracy in action, her worship the mayor, Councillor Ntombifikile Gumede, has embarked on an extensive mission under the mayoral izimbizo programme of engaging various communities across the district on service delivery.

The izimbizo is part of the municipality­’s plan to build partnerships with communities across the district on issues of service delivery­ as embodied in the mission­ statement of the municipality.

These sessions will also allow for consultation and feedback on programmes undertaken by the municipality in improving the lives of our communities.

This process of public participation is central to the municipality’s priorities as it enables the leadership of the municipality to address the real needs of communities in the most appropriate way.

It also helps to empower informed and responsible communities with a sense of ownership of municipal developments and programmes.

During these mayoral izimbizos this month and in November, the mayor will be engaging with communities on service delivery milestones. These sessions will also provide communities with a the opportunity of advising the municipality on how it should improve on its service delivery programmes.

Ugu District municipality, under the leadership of the mayor, Cllr Ntombifike Gumede, has adopted a programmed plan of action which seeks to achieve the following milestones:

• Develop and grow our district’s infrastructure in order to provide access to water and basic sanitation services.

• Accelerate economic growth and development.

• Fight poverty to ensure sustainable communities.

• Foster participatory democracy and apply the Batho Pele principles through caring, accessible and accountable service.

• Ensure good governance and financial viability in an effort to execute the municipality’s mandate.

“During this period, the municipality is reaching out and interacting with communities across the district in identifying their service delivery needs and it is of paramount importance that communities take advantage of their democratic right to participate in the affairs of the municipality by attending these meetings and share their constructive service delivery improvement views,” said Gumede.

Communities are therefore urged to attend the scheduled izimbizos­ in their respective areas and also actively participate in the dialogues and jointly contribute to the municipality’s objective of moving our district forward
