Meeting held for Merlewood house beneficiaries

2015-04-30 14:57

A PROTEST for houses, scheduled to take place on Tuesday this week, was cancelled after the Hibiscus Coast Municipality finally held a feedback meeting with beneficiaries in the mixed income housing project last Thursday.

Ronel Schalkwyk, who represents the beneficiaries, told Fever they have cancelled the march, pending action from HCM.

“The mayor told us that renovations to the houses will start in May and the project will be complete by September. So we will have to be patient,” she said.

Schalkwyk said beneficiaries appreciated the transparency they were finally receiving from HCM.

“We have always wanted to engage with them [HCM], now we are glad we are getting answers,” he said.

Merlewood residents have endured a 21-year wait for their houses. Many live in squalor, while others rent and live in other areas. Some beneficiaries have died waiting for their homes
