Need to start at grass-root level

2015-09-17 06:00

BEE in business has been a failure, Just look at the countless CEOs who have left a wake of destruction in major entities such as the SABC, SAA, Eskom, Prasa, Sapo, and many more.

Not satisfied with their failure in the business sector, the ANC is looking to replicate this in the sporting arena. In individual sports, an athlete will be chosen because he or she can throw further, jump higher or run faster.

With team sports it’s not easy to measure individual performance. Why are the politicians not complaining that there are not enough black tennis players, golfers, swimmers, cyclists and the like, representing South Africa?

Is it not because it’s perfectly obvious that there are no blacks interested in or capable of representing SA in these sports? Rugby and cricket seem to be targeted as these are the two major sports in which we rank highly and receive a lot of international and local exposure in.

If the ANC wishes to have more black players in these sports, it needs to start at grass-root level. Just as you wouldn’t push a middle-level manager into a CEO post, so too you can’t expect any provincial player to simply take to the field for SA against the likes of the All Blacks as they would expose them for what they are, average players.
