IN the midst of South Africa celebrating Women’s Month, a 57-year-old mother of seven, Sanathoria Mhlongo of Dweshula near Umzumbe, was found murdered and dismembered on Sunday.

A family member, who went to see if the woman was okay, discovered blood stains in the home and contacted Mehlomnyama police.

“The person could not find the mother and only saw blood stains,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Detective Warrant Officer Zorro Cele began investigating and found the upper torso of the woman about 20 metres from the house.

Further investigation led to the recovery of more body parts, a knife and other exhibits near a nearby house. The 19-year-old nephew of the deceased woman was arrested and appeared in Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The case was postponed to 30 September. The accused remains in custody.

Spokesperson for the ANC Women’s League lower South Coast, Nonhlanhla Gabela, said they condemned the murder of “an innocent woman”.

“We resolved at a recent conference that it’s the justice system that is betraying us. The police do their work, but the courts are too lenient with their sentences. Some murderers and rapist are even let out on bail,” she said.

She added that when bail is granted, the perpetrators commit the same crimes.

“As women, we need to stand together and fight violence against women and children.

“These criminals are robbing families of their mothers.”

Umzumbe Municipality Mayor Sydney Thembinkosi Gumede expressed shock at the incident.

Gumede visited the family accompanied by Ugu District Mayor Ntombifikile Gumede, Umzumbe Deputy Mayor Nompilo Mweshe and Ward councillor, Khulekani Msomi.
