GALAXY Bingo at Southcoast Mall has retrenched 62 of its staff before even opening its doors for business.

A disgruntled former employee contacted the Fever this week, explaining how he and others had resigned from other positions to take up employment at the bingo outlet.

“We have families and responsibilities. My brother and I worked at Galaxy Bingo and now we both don’t have an income,” said the man.

Staff were given notice of their retrenchment on 11 August. Their last working day was 11 September. They apparently received no retrenchment package and their salaries were short-paid.

“We were supposed to receive the balance of our salaries for August on the last day of work, but nothing was deposited into our accounts. We were then told we would receive our salaries on Monday, but again, nothing,” he said.

The man said he started working at Galaxy Bingo in February.

After two weeks of training, he and other staff reported to work every day and “did nothing”.

“We were told by management last month that the company could not afford to pay the rent and our salaries as they were yet to open for business. Their only choice was to retrench us.

“We went to CCMA to see if we could open a case, but were told that we had no recourse as the company was not yet in business.”

Apparently staff were also told they would have to reapply for their jobs when the bingo outlet eventually did open.

A spokesperson of Redefine, the company that owns the Southcoast Mall, said while the KwaZulu-Natal Gambling Board has accepted applications for bingo licences, according to the outcome on these has yet to be announced.

“Galaxy Bingo would therefore be unable to operate at Southcoast Mall without a licence. Galaxy Bingo’s retrenchment of staff is an internal issue,” said the spokesperson.

Galaxy Bingo was approached for comment but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press
