Oil spillage at Umbango River

2015-06-25 06:01

LAST weekend the Ugu District Municipality discovered a huge influx of oil which made its way to the Mbango Sewerage Works resulting into the treatment process from the plant to be compromised.

“The sludge settlement of this oil caused blockages of some components of the plant and as a result there was a spillage which made its way through to the Umbango River on Saturday,” said Ugu spokesperson, France Zama.

An investigation by the technical team is under way to detect the source of the oil which was deposited into the Umbango Waste Water Treatment Work’s which caused the spillage.

“Our clean-up operation of the plant is currently under way as there is still oil coming through the plant however, it has decreased and the plant is set for full operation,” he said.

Community members are urged to desist from being in contact with the Umbango River during this period while our team of technicians together with environmental services are on site to measure the extent of contamination which might be incurred due to this spillage.
