Olwandle High chosen to host prestigious soccer tournament

2015-09-24 06:00

OLWANDLE High School has been chosen to host the next round of the Top 32 Schools Soccer Tournament because they made it through to the top eight.

Sports co-ordinator Mkhondie Mufamadi said they are grateful for the opportunity however, the only problem is that they do not have suitable hosting facilities at the school.

He said the most suitable facility would be Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

He said the school asked the centre how much it would cost to hold the games there, but learnt they couldn’t afford it.

“We are a non-fee-paying government school and the school is unsuitable to host schools in a tournament of such high calibre,” said Mafumadi.

Mafumadi said this tournament means a lot to the school as not only will they be representing the school, they will represent district.

Mafumadi said they have asked the municipality, business owners and departments to assist them to make the day possible.

If they fail to get a suitable facility they will have to reject the offer and go to Durban for these matches he said.

Hibiscus Coast Municipality spokesperson Simon April said they are always there to assist.

“As the municipality we always try to help where possible and we consider the request for assistance on merit and as and when means to assist are available.”

Department of Sports and Recreation Ugu district manager Thembanini Yengwa said the school needs to advise the department of sports and recreation if they will be needing assistance.

“We have an MOU that we work with, Department of Education together with sports and recreation, where we work on programmes that assist schools. Olwandle should be in contact with both departments [sports and education] while there is still time and we will assist them,” she said.

Yengwa said they have a good relationship with the school and should not be afraid to approach them
