Phase 2 drought-relief budget proposed

2015-08-06 06:00

IT was announced at an Ugu council meeting at the Hibiscus Coast Municipality council chambers on Thursday that the Ugu District Municipality water services department has proposed a phase two drought-relief budget for the most affected areas within the municipality.

Water services general manager Lungile Cele said the project entails buying 10, 16 000 litre water tankers to deliver water to areas where dams, streams, bore holes and springs have dried up.

The initiative will also ensure that the municipality uses only in-house service in this regard.

“The municipality will have to contribute financially to this project - additional staff costs, operational costs for tankers as well as the cost of the water,” she said

Cele proposed that they buy water tanks with stands.

“This initiative will work hand in hand with the tanker system whereby static tanks will be placed in strategic locations to enable tankers to offload water.”

Ugu spokesperson France Zama confirmed that the plan had been approved by council.

He said they have requested that municipalities affected by the drought in the province submit further applications for drought-relief financial assistance
