Price of procrastination

2015-06-18 06:00

AS I write this column, mid-year exams are upon pupils. I am bet that some pupils are sitting back in confusion and horror wondering, perhaps regretting, how they wasted their study time.

Think back to the weeks preceding your exams when mom said, “It’s time to hit the books.” and you replied, “You are such a nag. Can’t wait to get out this house.”

Oh yes, I read your minds well. Remember how you stayed glued to your cellphone, tab and earphones listening to Rihanna, ogling over Bieber and following Iggy on Instagram, instead of becoming one with Macbeth and Mosquito Coast?

Yes, I’m still reading your mind and sorting through all the excuses. What about being on Facebook from 7pm until 2am, while spending only 30 minutes with trigonometry. I’m sure you get the picture.

Now you are scared and terrified of failing, or are you? I don’t know, but whatever the case, the price of procrastination is high, your future being the biggest expense. So guys, why are you waiting for the last minute?

Procrastination leads to regression and eventually failure to accomplish even the smallest tasks.

The way I see it, indulging in the big “P” will lead to your ultimate failure. People, there is life after school and I believe your parents have been warning you that your future is at stake and you won’t be living off them forever. But, more importantly, what about you?

Will you be a happy camper when you’re kicked out the house to fend for yourself. It is a hard life out there without an education. Look around you, and all you will see is poverty, sadness, disillusionment, disappointment and death mostly due to lost opportunities and being complacent despite being given the best chances. Do you think you could be happy not living your dreams?

Please get out of the mentality that you have enough time to prepare for your future because the truth is time is running out. Stop waiting for a hand-out from your parents and the government. Stop waiting around for other people to fight for your success-that’s your responsibility.

So, why am I telling you this - simple. I care about you and your future. I am broken at the number of young people who failed to make the best of their schooling and have lost their lives to drugs, suicide, alcohol, poverty and meaninglessness.

Are you ready to become just another statistic? Is that the legacy you want to leave behind someday? One of the greatest opportunities in life is education, a treasure nobody can take from you. You own it for life.

I get that you love your technology gadgets, your friends, boyfriends and/or girlfriends, movies and so on. There is a time for that. And if your friends, girlfriends and boyfriends are not encouraging you by giving you the space to study, well, I doubt they care as much as they say they do.

You have got to stop at some point and ask yourself if you are giving your best with your talents and abilities. Are you getting the best out of what God has naturally blessed you with?

You see, you have got to stretch yourself in your schooling years to discover what your true potential is. Think of it as your training ground for adulthood. You can be successful as a young adult, why wait for hand-outs to be a top achiever.

Discover who you are now, so you will know exactly where you are going to when you complete your studies at school.

My advice to you is to start with your mind and take charge of your future, stop procrastinating and start preparing for life because life is going to happen to you whether you like it or not. If you can resolve this matter in your mind then you will successfully change your behaviours.

It’s never too late to start making your life a success. And if you fail, try again and again. Don’t give up because there are no write-offs, mishaps, mistakes or failures; you have what it takes, you matter, you count and your best will always be good enough. Make a decision today to make the best of every opportunity afforded to you-no more excuses or procrastination. Don’t put off for tomorrow what can be accomplished today. This is your time, your season.

You have one life so, stop messing around and live it to the fullest and when you can look back someday, you can give yourself a pat on the shoulder in all humility knowing you gave it your best shot.

Wishing you well in your exams and sanity for your parents. Do it for you because you are most important at the end of the day
