UGU South Coast Tourism entered into a five-year contract with Dezzi Raceway owners, Des and Louise Gutzeit on Tuesday.

The purpose of the contract is to create South Coast brand reinforcement and destination positioning.

The venue in Oslo Beach is now officially called the Dezzi South Coast Raceway.

At the launch, Gutzeit gave a brief history of how the raceway was born, finally built to Motorsport South Africa standards.

The raceway boasts the only permanent drag-racing facility in KwaZulu-Natal.

“I used to test cars from the main road to the airfield in Margate. One day I lost control and nearly ended up in a dam. I spoke to my wife and we decided to tar the runway on the property ... three years later, we built the raceway, thanks to Louise and my children,” he said.

Justin Mackrory, CEO for Ugu South Coast Tourism said the raceway has created an avenue for Port Shepstone to put itself on the map.

“The benefits such a venue bring is tremendous. It attracts spectators, racing professionals, petrol-heads, the media and families,” said Mackrory.

He said that when motor-sport fans visit the raceway for events, they look for accommodation and places to eat and it is possible that some of those people will invest in property or business on the South Coast.

“The Gutzeits are true South Coasters. They have a can-do attitude and a passion for motorsports,” he said
