Rapist behind bars for 22 years

2015-08-06 06:01

MAJOR-GENERAL Thembi Ndlovu, Port Shepstone SAPS Cluster Commander, commended Warrant Officer Alex Ngcobo for the excellent investigation that secured a conviction and 22-year sentence of a rapist.

“Warrant Officer Ngcobo is a seasoned detective and our junior members would do well to emulate him. He is indeed a role model to them. Our FCS unit has consistently produced remarkable results and I urge them to continue in the same vein,” said Ndlovu.

Bongani Nkosingiphile Mhlongo (25) appeared in the Scottburgh Regional Court in July, when he was convicted of rape and sentenced to an effective 22 years’ imprisonment.

The case was investigated by Ngcobo, of the Umzinto Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS).

On 23 May at 11pm, a 15-year-old girl was returning home from a party in Thafeni Ward, Mistake Farm near Umzinto when Mhlongo grabbed her from behind and dragged her into the bushes.

When the victim refused to engage in sexual intercourse with him, he threatened her with a knife and raped her. He was subsequently arrested by police and brought before court to stand trial for her rape. - Supplied
