Sewer pumps vandalised

2015-04-30 14:58

THE municipality is reeling from shock and disbelief at the experienced level of vandalism and looting at the Ugu sewer pump stations in Umbango and Umzimkhulu respectively.

“Our sewer pump stations were broken into and demolished to a level where copper cables, electrical panels and electrical motors were discovered missing leaving the pump stations in a dysfunctional state,” said municipal spokesperson France Nzama.

Nzama said this occurrence has resulted in a sewer spillage running into Umbango and Umzimkhulu River.

“The municipality has dispatched a team of technicians on site to conduct an assessment of the damage caused on the pump stations and also conduct an environmental scanning in determining the levels of contamination that might have been incurred due to the spillage to the affected rivers,” said Nzama.

The municipality has also dispatched Vacuum Tanker Services to these pump stations to assist with the withdrawing of effluent in an effort to minimise environmental effect.

The municipality has urged the communities surrounding the affected areas to bear with them during this unprecedented period while they are still finding alternative options to mitigate this situation.

“We are also requesting community members to be vigilant and refrain from utilising the affected rivers until a conclusive assessment has been conducted,” said Nzama.

Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for local communities.
