Spend 67 minutes giving

2015-07-23 06:01

MANDELA Day isn’t just a day to honour Madiba’s life and legacy - it’s a day to honour his life’s work and act to change the world to a better place.

On Saturday, 18 July, people around the world will take part in special projects to celebrate Madiba’s birthday.

He asked that every person devote 67 minutes of their time to doing good, thus creating a global movement where people are kind to each other.

If you’re not sure on how to get involved, there are a number of organisations on the lower South Coast that need your help.

The South Coast Hospice is looking for volunteers to paint a wall, a sponsorship of knitted squares for a Mandela blanket, someone to tidy up its store room and a donation of a wheelchair. Hospice can be contacted on 039 682 3031.

Give a Child a Family in Margate would love it if people could make a difference by collecting and donating children’s toiletries.

“Baby lotions, toothpaste and soap are always items we need to give to the children that arrive at our temporary place of safety with nothing,” said Samantha Podmore, resource development manager for the organisation.

She said all children love to be spoilt, so they encourage people to spend 67 minutes in the kitchen baking biscuits which you can drop off at their centre for the children to enjoy.

“There is nothing better than a cookie to bring a smile to a child’s face and for those who can cook, you can visit our website and make a small donation towards making a difference in a needy child’s life,” she added. The website is www.gcf.org.za

Cansa lower South Coast is doing its bit to celebrate Mandela Day by spending 67 minutes in servitude of cancer survivors and patients.

“Employees and volunteers from 30 Cansa Care Centres countrywide will visit cancer patients on Friday, 17 July at regional public hospitals, clinics or treatment centres to provide encouragement and support,” said Lisa Strydom, Cansa KZN divisional manager.

With these visits, Cansa staff will present patients with a special bookmark, an inspirational quote by Madiba and will list the care and support programmes offered to cancer patients.

If you would like to assist Cansa in Port Shepstone call 039 682 7680.
