A PORT Shepstone resident said she found surgical waste material on the beach next to Stages Restaurant.

The concerned resident says she thinks this waste comes from one of the hospitals and might be coming from the sewer pump near the beach.

The resident says the material is flushed by hospital staff into the toilets­ which goes into sewer pipes that are currently not functioning well.

The resident collected some of the material as evidence of her findings­, including needle caps, syringes, condoms and toilet paper.

The Fever contacted Port Shepstone Regional Hospital to make them aware of the finding and the allegations.

Hospital spokesperson Phumza Morai said the hospital has an accredited service provider that is responsible for the collection, treatment and safe disposal of its medical waste.

“As we do not know the source of those surgical materials we would advise the municipality to investigate,” she said.

The municipalities was contacted for response.

Municipal spokesperson said the water services team went to investigate the area, but nothing was found, apart from two used condoms, which not in the system­
