Teachers’ meetings close schools

2015-05-21 06:00

LAST week I asked my employee how her sons were doing and I was surprised to hear they were not at school due to a teachers meeting. It was apparently a Sadtu meeting and schools have been closed since the Friday before last. This has been happening for years now and sometimes schools are closed for weeks on end. This practice of striking and using teaching time to have meetings is harming pupils and their future. For the pupils their only hope of rising up out of severely impoverished circumstances is a good education, but Sadtu, instead of helping their pupils, is harming them. Why can’t they have their meeting after hours and negotiate for their concerns in a different way instead of closing schools. They should actually have the future generation at heart first. This generation is depending on education to break through and we , as adults, should make it easier for them instead of pushing them down in the dust even further. I hope that this attitude of striking will end and we can take a stand to strengthen the future generation. Some of these children come from homes where there only meal is the one they get from the school. Some have no adults at home at all and probably look to teachers as role models. How much more do we want to damage them, as if they haven’t been damaged enough. Although there can be negotiations for whatever grievances there are, let’s make sure that the pupils don’t lose out on a single day of school, otherwise, repercussions of an unskilled work force will also hit us square in the face one day, if we don’t protect, strengthen and add value to the next generation.
