Ugu mayor honours women staff

2015-08-20 06:00

UGU District Municipality mayor, Ntombifikile Gumede, hosted an exclusive Women’s Day celebration for the municipality’s female staff most of whom occupy the bottom level of the municipality’s hierarchy.

The gesture was aimed at acknow-ledging the efforts and work commitment that has been displayed by these workers in advancing the organisation’s core service delivery mandate.

About 120 women were treated to a day of edutainment with the mayor and guest speakers sharing stories and advice on women development and the importance of being a woman in society.

The women were also reminded about how the new dispensation has transformed the realm of women in South Africa over the years.

Gumede also conveyed her appreciation to the women workers who work hard to ensure the municipality keeps to the mandate of delivering uncompromised service to communities the municipality serves.

Gumede encouraged women to take advantage of opportunities to better themselves, such as enrolling for courses that will improve their skills and know-ledge.

“This will allow you an opportunity for better employment thus improving your income, which will in turn address the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality in our households and the district as a whole.”

This event was also in line with the municipality’s employee health and wellness strategy, intended to cultivate workers’ morale in the municipality to improve work performance among staff.

Since the implementation of this programme, the municipality has witnessed improved staff performance which has translated into an improved service delivery to communities
