We need an ‘apartheid museum’

2015-07-02 06:00

VIS a vis, the cold blooded racially motivated murder of innocent worshippers in church in the American town of Charleston.

Allow me to examine the similarity of the equally racist killing by our own South African, Wit Wolf.

Both events, I dare say, emanate from the “white man’s” hatred of the “black man”. But thankfully the white and Arab slave traders have largely disappeared from the world. I say largely, because in all its hated forms and names, it persists in many parts of our so-called modern world.

Back to South Africa, Cape Town University and the poo saga on the statue of Cecil Rhodes. Add to this the desecration of a statue in Durban. We do not need a rocket scientist or luminaries from the world of sociologists to tell the world that all reminders in the form statues, flags and other hateful memorabilia “must go”.

So the decision taken in Charleston that pro-slave trademarks of flags and banners “must go” is wise and an acknowledgement of an evil period in our history.

As a South African, who has been a witness to and equally a victim of, like many millions of people, not yet citizens until Nelson Mandela’s presidency, to racial hatred, I make bold to ask our democratically elected government to take a firm stand to get rid of all racial reminders in any form from all public places in our country.

Then display these in a museum we can name “Apartheid Museum” along the lines of the Holocaust museum.

Our children and future generation of children will be able and encouraged to visit the museum not to build in them hatred, but to learn about the evils of apartheid and racism, and thus become good citizens.
