DURING the festive season - December - stabbing, murder and assault increase by as much as 50%.

In October, police minister, Nathi Nhleko, launched a national police operation - Operation Duty Calls - to deal with crime over the Christmas season.

The initiative focuses on curbing armed robbery, social crimes, tracking down wanted criminals, road safety initiatives and border patrols.

There are a number of reasons why crime rates increase over the festive season, one being increased alcohol consumption.

People spend more time in taverns, clubs and on the beach as part of silly season festivities.

Arguments and fights break out and some result in murder over stupid things because of the over-consumption of alcohol.

Recently a man was murdered in Gamalakhe after an argument which resulted in murder.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said in this incident the victim was having drinks with a group of friends when an argument started.

He stood up to go and relieve himself when the incident happened.

“While the victim was relieving himself he was stabbed in his back by one of the men he was arguing with.” said Mfeka

He said incidents like these are likely to happen during this time of the year and people should be extra vigilant and avoid getting into arguments or getting involved in such incidents.
