POLICE arrested a 37-year-old man, believed to be connected to the attack on a couple a week ago on the Port Shepstone beachfront, on Tuesday morning.

The suspect is also connected to an incident that took place in Olso Beach.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said in both cases the victims were attacked with bush knives, and a woman was raped.

“Warrant Officer “PC” Naicker from Port Shepstone SAPS received certain information on the whereabouts of the man,” said Wiid.

On Sunday afternoon a Fever journalist witnessed two women speaking to police officers at the Engen garage asking them if they had been able to arrest the suspect as they had allegedly seen him on the beachfront.

“Police officers Constable Mzakwe Makana, Sargent Mkhulu Fynn, Constable Bongani Hlophe, Constable Hle Hlongwa and Constable Nkosi Dlamini followed the information lead and went to Mkholombe, where the alleged suspect apparently rented a room, and arrested him,” she said.

Wiid said the suspect will be detained by police and faces charges of attempted murder and rape.

“The suspect is originally from Bizana in the Eastern Cape. Investigation will also be done to establish whether he is sought for other crimes,” said Wiid.

Ugu SAPS cluster commander, Major General Thembi Ndlovu welcomed the arrest by POP members.
