OCTOBER 4 marks World Animal Day, a day celebrated all over the world to raise awareness about animals and improve their welfare standards.

According to worldanimalday.org the day was originated by Heinrich Zimmermann, a German writer and publisher of the magazine Mensch und Hund (Man and Dog).

He organised the first World Animal Day on March 24, 1925 in Berlin and moved it to October 4 for the first time in 1929.

In May 1931 at a congress of the world’s animal protection organisations in Florence Italy, his proposal to make October 4 World Animal Day universal, was unanimously accepted.

“Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals,” the website said.

In commemoration of the day South Coast animal lovers share some of their special moments with their animals.
