HOLIDAYS are all about sun, sea and sand, but health niggles can spoil the fun. Learn how to protect yourself from these holiday health woes.

Research reveals that every year around this time numbers peak of those injured in cooking-related accidents, slips and falls (often in the bathroom), falls from a height, and poisoning from swallowing a harmful substance or object.

The good news is that most of these accidents are preventable and many incidents can be treated with first aid at home.

Here are tips to help you protect yourself and your family from common holiday health woes:

How to avoid food poisoning

If you’re holidaying in a foreign country be sure not to drink the tap water, be cautious of street foods and always carry oral rehydrating salt solution in case you suffer diarrhoea.

If bouts of diarrhoea or vomiting continue for longer than three days in an adult, 24 hours in a child, or just a few hours in an infant, it’s best to see a doctor.

Be cautious of festive foods like sticky peanut brittle, jolly candy sticks, mixed nuts, biscotti and caramel popcorn, which can all prove to be ‘tooth crackers’.

Treat stings and bites

-Avoid touching or handling animals or insects that sting or bite.

-Wear protective clothing, such as a wetsuit or waterproof footwear when swimming in the ocean, and scuffing your feet as you hike walk in the wild, to warn any creatures that you’re approaching.

Stings and bites from common summer bugs including sea creatures can usually be treated with basic first aid by applyin a cold pack to the affected area for about 10 minutes.

-Use anti-inflammatory or antihistamine to relieve pain.

Fight off summer colds

-Frequent hand washing is the best defence against summer colds.

-Keep hand sanitiser available for when hand washing is not possible.
