Bark first, ask questions later

2017-06-15 06:01

BORDER Collies are highly intelligent and about as highly strung, bubbling over with enthusiasm for any work or distraction that might come their way. I love them.

One across the road from us is named Odie. Bark first, ask questions later is his motto. The postman of course is a regular source of excitement, but the real attraction is the garbage truck every Monday. Odie’s sharp ears discern the gear change down and its imminent appearance.

As it gradually makes its way up the road, Odie’s excitement mounts. He rushes back and forth at the gate barking at an ever-higher pitch, interspersed with yelps. The engine whine rises in proportion to Odie’s incremental frenzy until about 20 metres from the gate where he literally goes into orbit.

The collectors don’t turn a hair at Odie’s delirium. As they and the vehicle move on, Odie abruptly stops as if switched off, having now seen off this weekly menace and stands, tail wagging slowly, staring after them awaiting their return from the top of the cul-de-sac.

Their reappearance is heralded by a lower-key performance, knowing they’re on their way out and not worthy of the full Monty, just a few “and don’t come back” barks. An anti-climactic silence reigns — until next Monday.
