Belated tests

2015-11-12 06:00

I HAVE been in education all of my life, and the last decade was spent teaching black pupils in a mixed-staff school.

Some of the teachers were excellent, prepared thoroughly, finished the syllabus, marked books at home, not just in the class while many pupils sat and did nothing. Others however, would arrive, tell the pupils to open the text book and would read from the text book, unable to explain difficult words, or carry out experiments as they were ill-prepared, and ignorant.

Dr Whitfield’s decision, from the Ministry of Education, to introduce competency tests is a worthwhile but belated decision to improve the abysmal educational standard in this country.
