Calling Afro hair stylist experts

2016-03-31 06:00

THE nationwide Sofn’free search 2016 has started and Sofn’ free is looking for hair experts for its HairXperts Masters Challenge.

Set to discover extraordinary talent in the South African black hair industry, the Sofn’free HairXperts Masters Challenge is open to stylists from all walks of life. This is the third year the competition has been run, and this year nearly 3 000 stylists entered preliminary stages.

A national panel of judges, headed by Disce Mamabolo, has combed through the finest hairstylists across the country, identifying 14 contestants to endure seven weeks of intense challenges in the style-off phase. Representing KwaZulu-Natal and the Ugu district this year is local stylists Nelisiwe Khawula (Nelly) of Back Stage Salon in Port Shepstone.

Khawula said she is proud to make it into the competition and dreamt of becoming a hairstylist from an early age.

She has been in the hair and beauty industry for 10 years.

“I am really inspired by the competition. Before entering I attended hair workshops to educate myself about different styling techniques, which add to my creativity.

“The competition has encouraged me to be the best I can, and I am not afraid of anyone,” she said.

Khawula asks locals to support and vote for her when voting starts.

The challenge will air every Tuesday for the next seven weeks on SABC1 between 9pm and 10pm. - Supplied.
