ON the South Coast there is one very happy hen, Cuckoo, named by veterinarian surgeon, Claire Norton, who has found a new home at the vet’s room in Port Shepstone after she was rescued from the sea.

Last week police diver Warrant Officer Marc Wiid from Port Shepstone SAPS Search and Rescue unit, was doing his usual beach patrol along the Port Shepstone beachfront when he noticed something strange in the shallow water. He went to investigate and found a drenched and shivering white hen lying in the shallow water, barely breathing.

He also noticed some white candles that the waves had washed onto the beach. He picked up the chicken and wrapped her inside his towel and took off to the vet’s rooms in Port Shepstone. The half-drowned chicken was left in the hands of the doctor there. Checking on his near drowning victim this week, Wiid was amazed to see a very healthy and happy Cuckoo following Dr Norton’s every footstep around in the surgery.

Cuckoo has since had a shampoo and because there are no other chickens around, she rules the roost.
