ABOUT two weeks ago thieves attempted to steal copper at a power substation in Southport.

According to Basil Lanka of Lazer 911, one person was arrested but the rest fled.

“The cable thieves left behind their tools and some cable which they were not able to steal at the time as they fled,” said Lanka.

Lanka said the same group of men returned to the substation on in the early hours of Wednesday to complete the job.

“Unfortunately, they managed to flee,” he said.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said police responded to the scene which occurred at about 12.40am.

“Two guards were in their hut at a power substation in Bendigo Road, Southport when they heard a window break,” she said.

“They allege that two suspects came in and told them to put blankets over their heads. The suspects were also armed with a rifle and a hand gun, according to the guards,” she said.

The guards then heard a vehicle reverse and what sounded like the men loading some copper cable into the vehicle.

“The suspects then drove off. No shots were fired,” she said.

A robbery case is being investigated by Southport SAPS.
