AFTER a long 800km ride from Alberton to Southbroom Golf Course, 13 cyclists were welcomed home by families and friends - one of the cyclist did not take part as he was felt sick before the start of the ride.

The ride was in aid of Pro Deo Care Group, an organisation that takes care of the sick and those with special needs.

Pro Deo member Doreen Campbell said they are always grateful for cyclists who participate on this fund-raising awareness ride.

This year, more than R300 000 was raised and will go towards a number of projects the organisation is involved in.

“The money this year will be used for expanding our cleaning services, we will invest in our Hospice project, assist young people with disabilities and some of it will go towards our school feeding programme,” said Campbell.

The Pro Deo ladies said the cycling tour is one their biggest fund-raising projects.

Participant Fred van Zyl said the ride was amazing, even though they experienced, at times, all four seasons along the way.

“We went through all weather conditions, heat, rain, mist and gale force winds, but we made it and we were all united.”

Family, friends and cyclists then went to lunch at the golf course.
