THEY eat, drink, they’re always merry and they also have a talent for a sport that they feel is not recognised enough.

A number of men and four women from different darts clubs, which fall under the Hibiscus Coast Darts Association banner, showed what they were made of at a prize-giving evening.

These people sure know how to play darts and their passion for the sport was evident at the association’s annual banquet at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre on Saturday.

“We have challenges in developing darts ... some believe that darts is associated with the overconsumption of alcohol, but that is not true as many of our players don’t drink alcohol,” said chairman Theron Mthelelo.

He said the stigma had to be broken and that the association will continue to work hard towards getting darts more recognised.

Mthelelo proudly spoke about the hard work all clubs had put into 2016 and mentioned highlights where members competed in regional games and at Darts South Africa.

“In 2016, we managed to secure five leagues. We thank and appreciate all the new sponsors that have come on board,” he said.

He said the association’s goal is to promote darts in all municipalities that fall under the Ugu District.

“We can do that if we work hand in hand, whether sports and recreation [department of] helps us or not,” he said.
