UGU District Municipality mayor, Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede, in partnership with Ezinqoleni Munici- pality, touched the lives of the impoverished Cele family from Shobashobane by donating a temporary house, and food, furniture and blankets during the December festive season.

Gumede and Ezinqoleni councillors officially handed over a Wendy House to the family on 29 December.

Celiwe and her brother Lungisani Cele lived in a mud shack with two of their siblings. Their living conditions were identified during a presidential visit to KwaShobashobane area in early December when Gumede took it upon herself to assist the family.

Gumede said the condition of the house really affected her.

“I was touched by the deteriorated state of the house and no one, regardless of their state, deserves to live in such conditions. As the municipality we had to do something to assist this family.”

She said although the municipality is a water authority, it will engage in social activities to improve the lives of its communities beyond its core functions of water and sanitation services.

Gumede also announced the donor assistance she received from a local businessman, Magama Cele, who committed to build a proper house for the family. Construction is set to start this month.
