THE Artists’ Gallery in Ramsgate was alive with artists, art lovers, good wine, art collectors and exquisite art works last Thursday.

The reason being that the gallery was, and is, ablaze with a selection of Vincent Reid’s work.

Reid is a pencil artist-extraordinaire and is considered one of the finest pencil artists in South Africa. He is one of the eight top notch artists in the collective at Artists’ Gallery.

The Glass Room in the gallery houses an exquisite selection of Reid’s actual pencil originals - to have so many of these in one showing is unusual and a most worthy collection to witness.

Two other walls in the gallery have been painted Vincent’s signature grey for his signed prints. His prints are available both on canvas and as unframed prints.

Both the originals and prints are for sale.

Actress and art lover Barbie Meyer opened the event with much hilarity and interesting titbits about the artist himself. Reid also has a signed, coffee table book of his works, available at the gallery - with only 25 in the edition.

Reid was born and raised on a farm in Zimbabwe and admits he has always been an observer of the outdoors. After completing his schooling in Harare he studied design and worked for 18 years in the exhibition and events industry.

He left to follow his heart and became a full-time artist in 2011 and has never looked back. His wife Tess has since joined him full-time and does all the printing and administration work. They work and live in Howick with their two children.

“Pencil is my medium of choice because it is an extremely direct medium which satisfies my desire to express the deep contrasts and textures of my predominantly very African subjects. I aim to capture those moments which represent the essence of the African outdoor experience,” Reid said.

The exhibition will remain up for a month and the gallery is open daily from 9am to 4pm.
