THE Gamalakhe police station, which has been operating from a prefabricated office for over two decades is falling apart due to a lack of maintenance.

Police officers say the charge office door hinges are broken, resulting in it being loose and letting in winter wind throughout the day and night.

A police officer, who is not authorised to talk to the media, said they have reported the broken door several times, but nothing has been done to fix it.

“Some weeks ago the door came off its hinges and was difficult to close or open. Now the door is totally off the hinges and is lying against the side of the entrance.”

“During the night there are only a few officers on duty and if it happens that most of them are out attending a call-out only one officer is left in the charge office and that person is not safe.”

Last year a police officer was shot at the police station after a man walked in and opened fire.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said he was unaware of the door situation, but would speak to the station commander about it.

“Replacing door hinges is not hard work, it would not even take a full day,” said Mfeka.
