THERE are a plethora of articles that deal with wedding how-tos.

From wedding venue advice to invitation ideas, etiquette rules and what type of dress you should wear, the wealth of information can be overwhelming.

But let’s stop and consider for a moment: it’s your big day, so everything that you’re planning should be a combination of the things that reflect the desires and wants of you and your partner. So don’t get bogged down by all the things you’re supposed to do, and rather think of what you want to do.

We’ve compiled some golden guidelines to aid you in having a happier experience planning your wedding.

• Don’t lose weight because it’s expected of you

Unless you, and only you, decide that you’d like to shed a few kilos before your big day, then by all means go ahead. However, if you’re feeling no inclination to change your physical appearance, then don’t let people bully you into it.

• Don’t invite people you don’t want at your wedding to your wedding

This one’s tricky to navigate, but the general rule is that it’s your wedding and you shouldn’t have to cater to your demanding aunt whom you see only twice a year at family functions.

• Don’t compare your wedding to someone’s past wedding

Pinterest has a lot to answer for in terms of encouraging petty competitiveness among brides-to-be.

There are a range of aesthetic styles that suit everyone and your definition of glamorous and stylish might be different from someone else’s, but it’s just as valid because it’s yours.

Remember, your style preferences are also a part of who you are, so while it’s okay to draw inspiration from other places, don’t forget that your wedding will be beautiful in its own right because of who you and your partner are to each other. If your style reflects that, then that’s what should matter.

Besides, you can still have a Top Billing-esque wedding without spending exorbitant amounts of money.

• Don’t change your name if you don’t want to

It’s your name and it’s part of you. Getting married shouldn’t mean having to give that up if you don’t want to.

Besides, keeping your maiden name doesn’t mean you’ll be any less married than those who choose to take the name of their partner.
