Government should assist us

2017-05-25 06:01

THANK you for a good and informative newspaper. I have noted that for safety reasons, our government has passed a law stating that school children may not be transported on the back of a bakkie. I have also witnessed numerous accidents in the past where children died when the bakkie transporting them to school was involved in an accident.

Clearly the government’s intentions are good but what about a person like me whose only source of income is the money I get from transporting children to school? Should I then park my bakkie and watch my family go hungry? Maybe the government will be happy if I steal from the rich people in town because there are no jobs out there.

What the government should have done is to compile a list of all bakkie operators and then see how we can be assisted. I am willing to trade in my bakkie if I can get a minibus, which I can then pay off bit by bit. I am not employed so banks cannot help me.

This is where government should be stepping in to help us. Already there are drivers who have received tickets for transporting children and are already looking at other unconventional methods of feeding their families.
