OUR primary goal as a water services authority is to ensure provision of uninterrupted water supply and sanitation services to our communities in both the urban and rural domains of our district.

Guided by this goal, we have accomplished many milestones in line with our core function that includes the completion of the multimillion-rand Harding Mains Replacement Project, which we handed over to the Umuziwabantu community last Thursday.

This project, funded by the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) at a cost of R13 184 202.60 guarantees improvement of water supply to the Harding CBD and approximately 300 households in the surrounding suburban areas of the town.

We carried out this project in two phases with the first phase commencing in October 2013 and completed in August 2014.
The second phase started in September 2016 and was completed in March. The scope of work included trenching, bedding and backfilling of the 75.110mm and 160mm diameter uPVC/HDPE pipelines, the laying, jointing and testing of all pipes, valves and fittings, the disconnection and reconnection of affected pipelines, the disconnection and replacement of all affected private connections into the new mains, installation of fire hydrants, the replacement of pavements, curbing, walls, fences and driveways removed during excavations works and the testing and disinfection of water mains.

We also pride ourselves that through such projects we are able to create temporary jobs for the unemployed in our communities.

In this project, a total of 47 temporary jobs were created employing 13 adult men, 12 adult women, 14 male youths and eight female youths, thus strengthening our fight against the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

Such opportunities also assist unemployed groups to attain skills to be able to go out in the field and find employment opportunities.

Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for local communities.
